AED grants help clubs save lives

Published on 03 May 2024

When someone suffers a cardiac arrest, every minute counts.

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are portable electronic medical devices which monitor heart rhythms and deliver assisted electrical shock (‘defibrillation’) to counteract sudden cardiac arrest.

For every minute that defibrillation is delayed, a person’s chances of surviving a cardiac arrest decreases by 10 per cent.

The early use of an AED can significantly increase a person’s chances of survival and now, with mandated installation in certain buildings, facilities and vehicles, the broader community can make a life-saving difference to those affected by cardiac arrest.

Preventive Health SA is helping sporting organisations to purchase and install AEDs and meet the requirements of the Automated External Defibrillators (Public Access) Act 2022 by offering grants of $1000 to eligible organisations.

All not-for-profit, community and sporting organisations which own buildings or facilities are encouraged to apply for the grants, which close at 5pm on Friday, May 24.

To be eligible, organisations must:

  • Be required to comply with the Act
  • Be the owner of the building or facility
  • Be located in South Australia
  • Be an incorporated, not-for-profit club, association or organisation that is sport or community related
  • Have an active ABN
  • Have public liability insurance with a minimum of $1 million per claim.
