Rideshare survey update

Published on 03 April 2024

You may recall that last year I launched a survey to ask people a simple question: would you like to see rideshare companies, such as Uber, able to operate in the Barossa Valley?

I recently presented the results of that survey in the State Parliament, and I thank the nearly 3000 people who took the time to share their view with me.

The results showed that 95.1% of respondents are in support of allowing rideshare in our region, whilst 4.9% are not.

Locals shared views that rideshare options could reduce the risk of drink driving, increase local job opportunities or provide young people with another safe option for getting home after a night out.

Over the course of the survey, I had lengthy discussions with many locals and businesses about rideshare, including with those who don’t support the idea or have concerns.

The reality is that rideshare services and taxis operate side by side, and co-exist around the world – including in Adelaide, Gawler, McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills. If there’s no demand for rideshare then there won’t be a business, but right now the market can’t be tested.

I’ve always maintained our local taxis provide a great service, but at busy times, during events and on weekends, there is room for rideshare and it is clear from the local response that having more transport options is strongly supported.

On the back of the survey, I've written to the Minister for Transport asking him to consider the overwhelming feedback and allow for more transport options for our local community and visitors. Watch this space!
